International Date Line

Today, we crossed the international dateline.

Or was it yesterday? Or tomorrow? It’s all very confusing. But we were already experiencing in retirement the “vacation effect” of losing track of what day of week it is. Without a regular weekly regime, it is easy to lose track of what day it is.

Crossing the International Date Line is often recognized by a “line crossing” ceremony. Mary and I were blessed with many “line crossing” ceremonies before leaving Chicago: retirement parties and going-away get-togethers. We also had our own ceremonies letting go of lifelong mementoes and the notion of a home as a base.

We have crossed many new lines in our lives and entered many new territories. Part of our lifelong love of travel and our retirement plan was to find out who we were in new situations and new places. Kind of like the international date line: who we are yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
